Little Red

The forrest was getting dark. Little Red’s pace quickened. Her eyes began to scan the trees in front of her.

The wind pushed and pulled the trees. Bringing the trees to life. It was creepy. As if the trees were moving. She started talking to herself now. It’s not real. Keep walking the path. I’m going the right way. Grandma is expecting me.

It was a cold day. Her mother insisted Little Red take her bright red jacket. It was made of wool with big pockets and an oversized hood.

Before she left to grandma’s her mother gave her a list of instructions.

How to get to Grandmas house:

  1. Follow the dirt path.
  2. At times the path will split. Always stay to the right.
  3. Under no circumstances should you go off the path.
  4. Look for the mulberry bush. Once you find the mulberry bush you are close to grandma’s house.
  5. Don’t eat the mulberries. You are allergic to mulberries.
  6. When you reach grandma’s house knock on her door six times.
  7. Stay at Grandma’s house. Don’t try to come back the same day. The forrest is not safe at night.

Little Red grabbed the list and stuffed it into a large pocket. She placed a pair of scissors into another pocket. Little Red her mother said, don’t forget the cookies.

Soon after she left her house—Little Red saw it. A startling blue flower on top of a thin green stem. These special flowers bloomed only once a year. Grandma will love these blue flowers Little Red thought. She envisioned a dazzling bouquet on her grandma’s kitchen table. Finding these flowers was all that mattered.

As light gave way to dark, the forrest changed. Looking for the blue flowers doubled the time it normally took to walk to Grandma’s house. With a basket full of flowers she stopped, took out her instructions, and read them carefully. She held it close to her face to make out the words. Stay to the right. Little Red retraced her steps in her mind. But all she saw was blue.

This must be the way to Grandmas house Little Red thought.

In a jolt she looked up. Her hood flew off.

She’s heard that howl before.
