Well-Being: Three Self-Care Practices

In the fast-paced rhythm of life, prioritizing self-care has become a cornerstone of maintaining holistic well-being. Drawing inspiration from my experiences and extensive self-help literature, I’m excited to share three self-care practices that have transformed my daily life and could also transform yours.

1. Embrace Minimalist-Type Shoes for Improved Gait and Mobility

One intriguing self-care practice that I’ve found remarkably beneficial involves the choice of footwear. Minimalist shoes, characterized by their thin soles and proximity to the ground, offer a unique perspective on how we connect with our environment. These shoes encourage the feet to experience the ground, enhancing our understanding of the terrain and positively influencing our gait.

Conversely, many conventional shoes, particularly men’s footwear, deviate from this natural connection. Elevated heels and thicker soles may provide extra height, but they also impact the body negatively. Raised heels tighten the Achilles tendon, reducing mobility in the ankle and calf. Moreover, the inability to feel the ground beneath our feet disrupts the brain’s interpretation of our surroundings, resulting in artificial gait patterns and potential issues ranging from ankles to shoulders.

I’ve tried a few different brands over the years, but the one brand that talks the talk and walks the walk is xeroshoes.com.

While writing this, I bought a pair of sandals from Xero shoes. Their sandals are about as minimalist as you can get.

2. Transform Your Sleep with Firm Surfaces

Building on the concept of connection with the earth, another self-care practice revolves around how we sleep. Opting for a firm mattress or even sleeping directly on the floor can deliver profound benefits. Like feeling the ground beneath our feet, sleeping on a hard surface offers valuable feedback to the body and brain.

Lying on a hard surface might initially be uncomfortable, but this discomfort serves as a message for the body to relax. The slow breathing that follows and the conscious effort to alleviate the discomfort help identify areas of tension and restriction. Contrastingly, soft mattresses provide little feedback, potentially leading to incorrect sleeping positions and tense muscles. Transitioning to a firm mattress gradually is recommended, or for the bold, straight to the floor. Although the initial adjustment period can be challenging, the results after a few weeks are truly transformative.

Remember: Hard surface, soft body. Soft surface, hard body.

3. Dental Care: A Holistic Approach

Shifting gears to oral health, my third self-care practice centers around dental care. Over the years, I’ve departed from conventional toothpaste and dental visits and cultivated a simple yet effective routine that has visibly enhanced my teeth’s health and appearance.

My routine is easy to follow and doesn’t require daily toothbrushing with nasty fluoride toothpaste. In the evening, I swish water in my mouth and occasionally brush with activated charcoal for deep cleaning. My morning routine is consistent—first, I rinse my mouth with water, scrap my tongue with a copper scraper, floss my teeth with dental tape, and a final rinse. Activated charcoal is my go-to for teeth whitening. I do this 2-3 times weekly. My diet also contributes to my dental health, as the elimination of processed carbs has worked wonders for my body and teeth.

Self-care is a journey of exploration, and these three practices have played a pivotal role in nurturing my well-being. If you’re intrigued by these ideas, I encourage you to delve further. Whether it’s the grounding connection of minimalist shoes, the transformative effects of sleeping on firm surfaces, or the holistic approach to dental care, each practice holds the potential to revolutionize how you feel and live. Remember, knowledge is your ally—research and explore to find what resonates best with your unique journey toward well-being. Thank you for joining me in this exploration of self-care and holistic health.
