People have amazing talent. Survival.
It’s something we share with wild animals.
It’s a trait we kept through many generations of domestication.
Even though we live in a place with few threats, we can still survive.
By survive, I mean becoming better at something that was once difficult.
If I were thrown into the wild, Naked and Afraid style—my survival rate would be low. It’s too difficult, too fast.
But If I was tasked to take nothing but cold showers starting in a month, I would have time to acclimate to this change and seamlessly transition from hot showers to cold showers.
This is what I mean by survival—taking the difficult and making it easier through acclimation.
Bit by Bit, slowly but surely, getting better at the difficult.
I probably talk about improvement too much, but it’s worth it. I want to remind myself that when life gets tough, the tough gets life.
Go ahead and dream. What is a skill worth having?
Writing.
Drawing.
Storytelling/sales/ad design.
Music.
3D modeling.
Anything is possible for people who decide to learn difficult things. As long as these steps are followed:
- Learn
- Stretch beyond your comfort zone
- Show your work
- Get feedback
- Repeat
I don’t like wasting human improvement potential on a job. When we work for a paycheck, I believe, the incentive to get really good drops. Why try when gains are capped? If there is a ceiling to what can be gained from the skill acquisition.
I’ve been fortunate to have time in my day to learn things that interest me. And I will continue to chase things that are beyond me.
Slowly but surely, getting better at difficult things.
