Creating new value is what’s important. To succeed, create new value. Or, create new value from old value. In a new and better way.
Many jobs don’t require creating new value. But rather require people to perform a repetitive task day in and day out year after year. How are you spending your time. Are you pushing buttons and turning dials all day? Or are you creating something new for us. If you find yourself in the former, what can you do to create? Even if you didn’t get paid extra for it. If you are content with your current position, and you don’t care about advancement, then by all means keep pushing those buttons and turning those dials. But to make a real impact, create.
This blog post is about a way to think about daily work. Everyday you are in two states of work. Either creation work and other. Other is called other because it doesn’t lead to progress.
In most cases what seems like progress is actually standing still. For example, working at a job does not create progress. Sure the raises and promotions feel like progress. But on the creative progressive continuum is an incremental increase.
Everything great was created. And the evolution of people is going to involve creation. Because evolution is a thing. All us animals do it.
Evolution exists because perfection doesn’t exist. Nature is not perfect. If nature was perfect then evolution would not be needed. Nature itself is always in a state of improvement and evolution. And we should be doing the same.
It is interesting that the antonym to creation is destruction. Maybe that is not to far from the truth. Meaning that if something is not being created it is not in the form of evolution. And with evolution comes improvement and progress. And destruction comes, well… not good stuff.
System of Creation
I default to systems a lot. I suppose systems make me feel all warm and fuzzy in my breeches. I want to create an entire business around creation. I want to have a business who’s sole purpose is to create. Because if creation is not happening all the time, progress stops.
Have a system that allows you to create on a daily basis. No matter the scale. Wether it be a blog no one reads or a product intended for millions of people. Have a system set up to work on these creations everyday.
My day usually starts the same. I do thirty minutes of ideation followed by thirty minutes of blogging. At the start of my day I am knocking out an hour of creation. And I will do more throughout the day.
This is an important focus for me. Because I feel a fulfilling life comes from creation. And opportunities for creating new value are plentiful. This blog is a form of new value. A pod cast is another form. A business is another form.
I will conclude this post by saying—we are not perfect and we’ll never be perfect. We should take the lesson nature is offering us and create. Evolve. Take what is not working and make it better. Create or die.
